FAQ

What is an OMS?

OMS stands for Order Management System.

At the most fundamental level, an Order Management System is middleware that is placed between the organization's front-end ecommerce shopping cart, and the WMS or Warehouse Management System.

An OMS receives orders that are placed on the frontend website, provides a variety of order management capabilities for the business, then forwards those orders to a fulfillment center for the final stages of fulfillment.

For example, an OMS can be used (among many other things) to sort, organize, or delay the arrival of orders to the fulfillment warehouse.

Why do I need an OMS?

An OMS is needed for any company that wants greater control and customization over their order fulfilment processes.

Without an effective OMS, companies have little to no control over the management of their orders, which could lead to undesirable inventory management or shipping and logistical issues.

Here are some business examples to illustrate why you need an OMS:
  • Customized "batching" of similar order profiles.
  • An OMS can split orders into packages which can be sent to one or more fulfilment centers based on inventory needs and other business logic.
  • An OMS provides an opportunity to hold orders for error correction before forwarding them on to a fulfilment center.
  • An OMS prevents orders from reaching the fulfillment center if there is an inventory issue.
And much, much more!
